Module 5 Post

When I was looking for a movie based on a Phillip K. Dick book I viewed it digitally through Net Flix. There is beginning to become more and more competition between dvd's and video on demand. It is actually beginning to make dvd's obsolete. Thornburg (2009) described increasing returns as, two innovations hitting the market at about the same time and by chance one technology gets locked in, and the other technology becomes extinct.

Thornburg (2009) defined Red Queens as huge competition between two strong technologies in the process and all other competitors are left behind these two technologies. Thornburg stated that Lewis Carol reviewed the Red Queens as Alice in Wonderland who has looked through the glass and ran as fast as she can. He said that Red Queens are a competitive force that drives emerging technologies.

I believe that DVD's and video on demand are in the enhancing and obsolescing quadrants of McLuhan’s tetrad. Both sources make it easily accessible to viewers

  • How is Second Life a disruptive technology?
  • What technology or innovation did it displace?
  • How many years do you think Second Life has left before another emerging technology or disruptive technology replaces it?
  • What are the social benefits of Second Life, and what might be the social implications of virtual worlds in your industry?

According to this weeks resources, a disruptive technology is a technology that functions much like one that already exists but it may function more effectively and could end up replacing the mature technology (Laureate Education Inc., 2009a). Second life is a disruptive technology because it is basically a game where people play "life." It allows for people to reinvent themselves to be whoever they want to be and to actually live that life virtually. It really blows my mind that people have time to actually participate in this type of game. Second life reminds me a lot of the game Sims but appears to be far more advanced. It is more advanced because of the graphics that it contains, it creates an engaging stimulating environment that can appear to be better than real life. I could see some people becoming so obsessed with this type of game that they loose a sense of reality and believe that this game is their life. It is a fascinating technology but I do not think it is very beneficial to many. I do not think Second Life will be around for very long and it will be replaced with something even more advanced and hopefully more beneficial.

Module 3
Rhymes of History Technology

Mark Twain states that history may not repeat itself but it rhymes a lot (Laureate Education Inc., 2008). Dr. David Thornberg (2008), discusses that new technologies are often based on older technology ideas, they are just rekindled and improved (Laureate Education Inc., 2008).

When thinking about this idea of emerging technologies, I think about transportation. Transportation has been around since the Native Americans used horses to get from one place to another. It has just evolved  over years and years to become more and more effective. After riding horses, people began to use horses to pull wagons and the people rode in the wagon. Then horse shoes were invented to provide comfort for the horses. The history of transportation goes on and on until where we are today. We now have automobiles that can run off of electric charge without the use of gasoline. We have autopilot systems, navigation systems, and so much more. But all of these emerging technologies are based on a idea of technology that has been around since the beginning of time. Here is a timeline of the history of transportation http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bl_history_of_transportation.htm

Whenever new technology emerges it takes the place of a technology from the past. This is very clear when looking at transportation. When automobiles were invented the horse and buggy became obsolete. It is actually very interesting when you look at history and the patterns that occur.

Mobile applications have changed the way many people use the internet. They allow us to easily access our preferred websites with one simple click on our phone or Ipads. This technology will begin to replace opening a web browser and spending a few minutes typing in your desired location.

Enhances
Applications allow people to have easier access to games, websites, bank accounts without having to browse the internet.
Obsoletes
This technology replaced the wasted time browsing on the internet. You are able to access the site with one click of a button.
Retrieves/Rekindles
The technology that this retrieved is the use of web browsing.
Reverses
The mobile applications may cause web browsing to decrease.

The Smart table is a current technology that has emerged in the last few years that shapes learning in my school system. The Smart table is an interactive learning center that allows up to six students to work collaboratively on an activity that the teacher downloads onto the device. I recently received this resource last year and my students absolutely loved it. It makes learning fun and interactive. The teacher is able to download activities that align with the current content being taught.

However, there are some challenges when it comes to using this device. Currently, there are not that many activities that align with the concepts being taught in the classroom. The activities that do exist are not always the most entertaining for the students. There is a software that you can purchase where you can create your own activities but my school system did not purchase this.

Also, this table is much more sensitive than they lead you to believe. It shuts off randomly and sometimes will not come back on for a day or two.

The societal need that this resource meets is that it provides an interactive collaborative technological resource that makes students think that they are just playing games when in fact they are learning from it. When functioning correctly it is a great resource to have in the classroom and works well with all elementary students.

If I had the software where I could create my own activities this resource would be even more valuable to me. Something that would make this technology even better would be a way that the students could choose what concept they want to work on versus being stuck on the same concept and same four games.

Here is a good video about it.
